Advice on emergency preparedness

by Ja King

I believe that it is always a good idea to be prepared in case of the untimely event of an emergency. some of the things you can do before an emergency occurs are to purchase a first aid kit, a kit with water and food in case of a natural disaster, and create a clear evacuation plan in case for you and your family in case you need to leave quickly. All of these are extremely good things to have in order before an emergency strikes.

It is also important to keep your emergency supplies in a cool dry place where you and your family know where they are located. If you can, having more than one first aid kit in several areas in your home may be a great idea.

Practicing your evacuation plan regularly is a fool-proof way to be ready, and to eliminate confusion at the time an emergency may occur. If you have pets, don't forget to plan for their safe evacuation as well.

While being prepared in these ways may save many lives, I think that two things, in addition to the ones mentioned above are essential when preparing for emergencies. They may make the difference between life and death. These two things are clear communication and staying calm!

These two things; communication and staying as calm as possible, are things that we all possess, and don't cost one cent. If people work together, listen to one another, and give care to each other during an emergency situation, it can make a world of difference. By staying as calm as possible, everyone will be able to follow an emergency plan much better. Listening to others and focusing on what is going on at that present moment is very important. If we start thinking about what might happen, we may increase panic. Focus on the "now", and it will help to keep some stress at bay.

And one last note, it is good to be prepared, but don't forget to live your life in the moment! Enjoy the days that you do have and do the best you can do. Don't let the fear of a possible emergency engulf your life before an emergency even happens! Be prepared but not overwhelmed.

Life is precious! Live it to the fullest...and be prepared for all of the good and the bad.
