I feel volunteering should be as the word says VOLUNTARY not forced upon children. If it is forced it is no longer volunteering, it is a community service project graduation requirement. This then waters down the goodness of volunteering. Volunteering should leave one with a good feeling about what they just did not resentment for having to do it. I also want any volunteer I work with to want to be there, this way I know they are of the highest quality not some someone who is there to do a half a*ed job.
In my house, I do not have to force the volunteer issue on my kids. We lead by example and my kids have picked up on that and volunteer a lot of time for different organizations. We do not say we need to volunteer for such and such. My kids come to us and say we would like to help do XYZ and off we go. I think parents must instill helping others by volunteering themselves. I do not like school administrations or school boards forcing volunteering on my children, I will take care of that. Kids will follow the lead and want to help.
