I think one of the most lovely town where to live is PERUGIA, Central Italy, the capital of Umbria Region, if you like a medium towm with comfortable streets and railways communications and you love art, nature, quietness and good cooking.
It's a very ancient town, founded by Etruscans (whose walls still surround it) in VI-VII century B.C., it shows today a magnificent medieval centre on the top of a hill near to Tiber River. It counts about 164,000 inhabitants, with the old upper town not allowed to car traffic and linked to the plane by a series of funicular railways and moving staircases.
Perugia's climate is rather mild; not too cold in winter (average temperature in January, 4.2C, with frequent snowfalls) and not too cold in summer (average temperature in July, about 23C).
Perugia is full of precious monuments: the DOME, the MAJOR FOUNTAIN (Fontana Maggiore, XIV century), the PALAZZO DEI PRIORI, with the NATIONAL GALLERY of UMBRIA, an important museum, full of Renaissance and Etruscan artworks, SAN PIETRO CHURCH and many other monuments.
What makes lively and cool everyday's life in Perugia is the famous University for Foreign Students, founded in 1308 and frequented by thousands of students from all the world to study Italian language and culture who give this town a fascinating international atmosphere.
Furthermore, this is the Italian capital of CHOCOLATE, produced by artisanate and industry, together with Turin.
Every year, in Perugia, there's the Eurochocolate International Fair, with everything you wish to "die" for chocolate.
Then, this is one of the main points where the famous "Umbria-Jazz Festival" takes place, collecting the best jazz artists from all the world; the plays of this festival are also in other towns of Umbria, in the same days.
Perugia is in the center of a beautiful green region, very rich of nature, art, history, great cooking specialities, wine, olive oil, artisan traditions.
Over here, EVERY big or little town is an art jewel, where it's always possible to eat tasty and genuine food. One of the most important places of Perugia territory is TRASIMENO LAKE (125 Km2) westward from the town, originated by a natural depression invaded by water.
This is a delightful and quiet turistic attraction for its natural environments and the great richness of vegetation and birds species around its banks and the little medieval towns around it.
One of the main centres along the lake is Castiglione del Lago, with a beautiful castle on the lake.
