Ooooh - Very Long Hair: It's Not What You Think
"Your hair is great," I heard from a guy as he rushed by me in the grocery store. "I've always wanted to grow mine out really long like that, but it never got past my shoulders," girls often said as they went to the next question of, "What styling products do you use?" or "How long did it take you to grow it to that length?" These comments and questions were ones that any woman wouldn't mind hearing and answering. In fact, the guys were rather fun to watch while trying to say something nice (these days) to a strange woman without fear of being hit with a purse and yelling "sexual harasser over here!" They had to give the compliment quickly and far enough away from me so that there wouldn't be any retaliation....should I be a woman who just might not like hearing that sort of comment. Yet my hair was always a conversation piece; one that if given the chance to discuss it, surprised my listeners a great deal.
It seemed that having hair that was longer than usual, such as mine, which was just below my jean pockets (that I sit on), meant strong and healthy hair. Along with that if it was naturally curly, which I had also, people got the notion that it was a "wash and wear" sort of style. Just wash the hair and let it dry in a jiffy without even having to try to style it. What a deal I had, huh? Then there was the color. My color was a reddish-blond, which seemed to stick out no matter where I went. I hadn't planned for it to be so bright, but people liked the color and often said that the long curls made me look "Elizabethan", especially since there had been a movie out in that era and the main character had fair skin and a slender body like I do.
Well, every opportunity I had to change this fairy-tale picture I did. Actually, in many ways caring for my hair was more primitive and "Elizabethan" than people would have thought. The problems associated with having longer-than-normal hair are not dreamy but can be both painful as well as expensive.
Having to deal with length like mine meant that everything one does each day brings along a bunch of hair with it to keep out of the way. If you don't keep hair out of the way of anything moving or even slightly capable of "grabbing" your hair you may not get it back. This can actually be so dangerous that I have heard of other persons losing their entire scalp in machinery. For me, daily trips to the bathroom had to be a "dance around the toilet" so that my hair would not fall
