In western culture it is relatively rare for men to wear skirts. Clothing is very gender specific, and many men have deep-seated insecurities regarding their masculinity. They fear the possibility that they may be perceived to be homosexual. Even if that isn't a specific fear, there is the concern that gay men might proposition them - a fate worse than death, as they see things.
Let us assume that no man is homophobic, and the social pressures of expected gender roles do not exist. If that was the case, would more men wear skirts? Are there certain difficulties relating to skirts and anatomy that does not affect women, but would seriously impact on skirt-wearing men?
My contention is that they are unforeseen difficulties, completely independent of societal norms.
In order to state more than an opinion, I carried out an experiment and have gathered valuable empirical data. I dressed as a woman, in the name of science, and attended a Halloween party to interact with other strangely-dressed (but not gender-confused) people.
The following is an account of my experiences. The raw data of the experiment, so to speak.
I have worn a kilt before, so I didn't think the short dress would be much different. Maybe I just didn't think.
There is actually much to consider. When wearing a short skirt one has to do everything with great care, lest something unpleasant is exposed. Women have been wearing these scraps of material their whole lives and can do anything they need to do instinctively, without worry. Not so for me. I had to concentrate.
1. Sitting down:
As soon as one bends, the edge of the skirt trails up around one's waist. This might not be a problem for cross-dressing porn stars, but the other party-goers made it clear that it was a problem for them. So it was necessary to hold on to my butt when sitting.
2. Extra bits:
Men have testicles. This is why they usually sit with legs apart. Some guys like crushing their gonads between their thighs, but they are generally guys who wish they didn't have any. You may argue that men who dress in women's clothing also hate their testicles, but that isn't necessarily true. I don't hate mine. I am actually quite fond of them. I can't speak for other men who have worn women's clothing. It is possible that every other man who has ever worn women's clothes actually hates his sensitive dangley-bits, but I don't know. It is enough to say that I had to crush my precious family heirloom between my thighs that night, and I did not enjoy it.
