I thought long and hard before I decided to write an article on this subject. To me it's unbelievable that the question even exists. I wasn`t sure that I wanted to point out the explanations that were given to deny these atrocities and so fuel the debate. However, I then realized by doing so I might be able to help rather than undermine the efforts made by survivors to make sure that the holocaust is never forgotten.
I have visited many concentration camps and death camps, from the less horrendous Theresienstad to Auschwitz and Majdanek as well as met a man who was once imprisoned in the famous death camp in Owicim. I can't even start to imagine how all the people who were in these camps feel when they see this question. I suppose the reason all these incredible men and women who go around to schools and tell their story and shows their tattooed number is so that this question will no longer arise. But the fact that it still does is worrying.
Soon there will be no more living witness to these hideous mass murders and it might be even easier to try and persuade people that it actually never happened. Thankfully enough, there are so many evidence and landmarks around Europe that it will be hard to erase these. Not only is some of the camps still intact, Auschwitz being the prime example as the Nazis left before having time to destroy the place or the evidence, there are survivors, transcripts from trials and documents and film footage from when the Allied troops liberated the camps.
I believe that these crimes were so unbelievable that people sometimes find it easier not to think about them. But why not do the other way around? Why not stare it right in the face and promise to make sure it doesn't happen again?
Claiming that the Holocaust was a myth is an attempt of brainwashing people and makes them believe in the values that once were the foundation of the Third Reich in Nazi Germany. It is vital that we do not allow this to happen. I have heard stories of young people claiming that they are Nazis, that the Holocaust never occurred and then finally cave in when made to sit down and watch evidence after evidence. That proves that the myth isn't long lasting and that we can all help to make people see the truth.
Through education we can all be wiser and in this particular case the Nazis left so much evidence behind that you could never doubt it. The real question here should be; how could mankind let this happen?
