Essays: Fantasy

Fantasy is a manifestation of our dreams.

The genre itself is derived from our most intimate introspection of our dreams. Fantasy should not be limited by Tolkien tales and their derivatives. The elegance of fantasy is that it has unlimited potential.

The attraction to fantasy is analogous to an exquisite dream. The type that was so enticing that you were disappointed when you awoke. A melancholy washing over you that requires you to attempt to return to the dream by going back to sleep. But alas, this usually proves futile. It's a feeling similar to reading that final chapter or viewing the final scene. You don't want it to end.

This attraction leads to people searching for escape in the worlds of fantasy. Whatever the medium, whether it be a movie, a novel, a video game or a dream. I believe the need for escape is obvious to us all. We live in a world where we have sayings such as "nice guys finish last." Fantasy allows us a much deserved reprieve into amazing adventures of the most extraordinary sort.

We all must awaken from our dreams. I believe when we die we will join the world of dreams. And as a Christian I believe that all of our dreams will come true.
