The realities of being a writer

Reality often cramps the style of writers. For beginning writers, those still in school when the first notions of writing become persistent, reality should not be a controlling force. It would be best to follow your inclinations, rather than try to force them into real situations. In time, and it takes time, your style of writing will manifest itself, and this is where reality can begin to show the way to your better writing self. Still, 'stream of consciousness' writing is an excellent way to overcome writers block. It gets the ideas flowing. All you need to do is to jot down on paper your ideas as they come to you, or if you are using a computer, your fingers will be your drummer and you beat out your message as it appears to you.

This not only will tell you how much is real, how much is fantasy, and how much is nothing but nonsense. But out of the pile of words should come some enlightenment that can be expound upon and reasoned out.
Up to here we have been considering reality as to the content of the writing, not the reality of the business of writing. Your writing may be excellent, well done, and something you can be proud to show your family, friends, but be nothing that will sell. And on the other hand it, if reality be served, it may not be anything but you venting your emotions.

How can you expect to make money on your raving and ranting? To make money on your writing, you need find a publication, a brochure, a place that needs your advice, laughs over your witty words, cries with you over your afflictions. Some one must write what a particular audience need to know, or wants t hear, so why cannot this someone be you? It can be you if you do the job better than anyone else that is applying for that job. The bad part is that there are many applying and at first, most are nearly always better prepared than you or I. The reality here is perseverance. Learn where you went wrong. If your perseverance matches your learning capacity, then eventually more writing jobs will be yours. The reality here is it may take more work than you are willing to put forth, or be beyond your ability to fulfill.

Whatever, reality, at some time in your writing life, will dictate and you will be a better writer for it. Not, however, a successful writer, necessarily. In writing it helps to know why you write. Do you write because there is something deep within you that tells you must. Are you in love with words and their possibility for expanding your horizons? Do you find rearranging words to create clearer pictures and to describe more accurately something you hold dear, a worthy endeavor? If you answer yes to these then there is no way you will ever quit writing. You will make mistakes but you will continue. The reality of writing is that it is something you must do. Learning to make money from something you love to do is about the best kind of work there is. It is that dream job that most writers want.

If you are good writer and one a cut above most others, it does not matter what kind of writing you do, your finesse with words will prove invaluable. That is the kind of reality in writing that will pay dividends. You will find a way to inject a love for the words, the tools of your trade, into often dull business writing or writing for medical journals that as every one knows need a lighter touch now and then.
