care has progressively dwindled. I freely admit my Mom is a tough old bird, who else would be still alive after 8 major surgeries in the span of about 3 weeks? She can be downright mean and ornery at times, BUT I think that is a plus at this point in her life, I feel that IS a major reason why she IS still alive today! I've personally lost a lot of faith in quite a few doctors, nurses and the medical system in general. I've been lied too, misled and here quite frequently I'm told two totally different things by alleged "health care professionals" from the very same hospital and floor!. My Mom led a very active lifestyle until early March, she is a young and energetic 56 years old. Only thing I've ever seen her need help with is an occasional heavy item or two, usually over 40 pounds, since she is or was only 5 foot 3 and about 130 pounds BEFORE she went into the hospital. Now she is about 107 pounds, has had 2 operations on her colon alone where a doctor possibly "nicked" it, and where another doctor says that it had a cancerous spot. It has been extremely hard for me to watch her literally deteriorate before my eyes in a hospital bed, this amazingly strong women withering away inside a pale hospital room. Ventilators, respirators, monitors. IV's, and a trichotomy tube. A "babysitter"stationed in her room constantly at watch to make sure she doesn't try to get out of bed and "get away". To see her doped up and restrained for her "own" safety and well being is very hard for me. I can honestly admit when she gets out she will never EVER go back into another hospital. I know in my heart she would rather die at home then be treated like this again.
To top off my agitation they have been administering an old drug named Haldol ( Haloperidol) which is an anti psychotic drug! It is used in the treatment of patients with Tourettes' Syndrome, and Schizophrenia, among other things. Neither of which my Mom has ! BUT the side effects seem more dangerous then this medieval drugs benefits are worth. It is used FOR agitation and aggression in my Moms case BUT caused worse agitation and aggression !
I am a firm believer that it caused confusion, and she had abnormal shaking of her hands and fingers which she never had before being treated with this drug. At a point early on when they first started using this drug she didn't want to open her eyes, as they were extremely sensitive to light. Her dosage was 5mg of this drug AS NEEDED. But I feel this drug was detrimental to her wellbeing
