The cult of celebrity and its effects on society. Not quite an accurate topic description since celebrity in and of itself is not a cult. It is a way of life to some, a means to an end for others.
The fact that some people hold them up to the light and refuse to see their cracks is neither the fault of the celebrity nor of society as a whole.
I'd like to think that most people are intelligent, free thinking individuals and only a handful require a role model outside of their immediate circle of family and friends. We all aspire to be like someone. That's what raises the bar of our moral fiber and makes us work harder to perfect ourselves... to reach our personal best.
I will admit though to having been inspired by many famous people. Inspired either by the music that they create or by the dedication they display in achieving their celebrity. I am touched by famous people who do things that positively affect the world around us, whether it be by donating their time to charities or getting their hands dirty and getting out there to help in times of disaster and despair.
So many of these wonderful people have their motives questioned because people assume their only motive is to generate press for themselves. If they are worthy of our disgust or disdain, can they not also be worthy of our admiration and respect without having to elevate them to an unrealistic station in life. Cult indeed! I think that reflection leaves me cold.
