My husband and I think fish make great pets, whether they are tropical or goldfish. When we first moved into our new house, we unfortunately, lost our 3 yr. old budgie and our 1 yr. old cocktail, due to, too much stress of the move! And, our children were devastated and sad, so we went out and bought some goldfish, 2 named, "squiggles" and "lady". The children, were excited and happy again. I didn't think fish had personalities until, I watched them one night. "Lady" began chasing "squiggles" around the tank, as if she was playing "tag". Sometimes, if "squiggles" is in a corner, just taking a rest, "lady" will come up behind him, and nudge him at his tail! "squiggles" will then squiggle upwards toward the surface at the top,of the tank and then shoot downwards and around the rock object, trying desperately to get away from her. Whenever our children, feed the fish, both of them will race quickly, to the top to see who would be first to get the food! After seeing them, play together, I was convinced, that fish DO HAVE personalities. Our children, enjoy, watching them, day after day, and we hope they will live for more than 3 years, considering that's they're life span, reading up on some books about goldfish. Fish make great pets whether the children are very young or older, it gives them the responsibilities, to care and feed for them. We, as parents would recommend fish as the #1 choice for children to start out and learn responsibility, and then moving on to larger pets!
