Sciatica symptoms

Sciatica is a debilitating affliction. Having suffered from sciatica, I have experienced first hand, its sudden onset and severely debilitating effects. While people may experience different symptoms and varying levels of difficulty and intensity, below are some of the more common symptoms.

1) Lower back pain. This is usually coupled with pain in the leg which can be quite severe. When I had my first attack, this is how it started. I would try to stand and my legs just would not be able to hold me up and I would eventually buckle under the pain.

2) A nagging pain on the buttocks, usually more to the side. This I have also had the misfortune to experience. It is a quite uncomfortable sensation as you find it very difficult to sit while at the same time your back is too weak to allow you to stand for any length of time.

3) Sharp pain in the legs and back. When this attacks, you feel like you don't even want to breathe as the pain would get worse. You are also afraid to move as with each step the pain is excruciating.

4) Numbness in the foot and leg. This feels like your feet are in a constant state of cramping. They feel weak, and you appear to have very little control over your motor skills. Your legs buckle easily and your feet and legs feel very tired.

5) Pain in the heel. This may be accompanied by other symptoms like numbness in the leg and side. I find it easier to stand than sit with this type of pain even if only for a short time. But walking can be a real chore and you, can't help but walk with a noticeable limp.

Sciatica is a very painful condition that can incapacitate a person for a few days to months. My secret, which I discovered purely by accident, is walking. As difficult as it was to start, I found that the longer I walked, the better I felt and eventually the pain went away and stayed away long after I stopped walking. Of course, you should only try this when you start to regain your mobility and can walk with little discomfort. As with any exercise program, talk to your doctor before you start.
