Buffy the Vampire Slayer has come a long way on our small screens from its cinema debut in the early 90's. When we think of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, rarely do we have images of Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry these days, but instead of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan and the array of attractive vampires sometimes at her side.
The Buffy movie was one of Joss Whedon's early directorial pieces. He wrote the story and was given a small budget to work with and the result was a cheap, potentially entertaining 90's vampire flick. While the film was good for what it was, right up there with the likes of The Lost Boys and similar, it did not do exactly as Joss had hoped for. He had higher expectations for his Buffy idea and thus, Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series was born.
This show hit our screens somewhere in the mid to late 90's, when I was a highschool student myself, around the same age as our favorite characters. Instead of being a whiney cheer leader type, the new Buffy was tough, a little bit strange and doing her best to hide from her vampire slaying past. However, her luck ran short pretty much as soon as she arrived at Sunnydale High, with a new watcher soon by her side. Unlike the Buffy of the past, this Buffy accepted her fate, somewhat willingly and soon had one of the biggest cult followings of any television series, supernatural or otherwise. She became the girl all us other teenage girls wanted to be and the girl that teenage boys wanted to date!
The characters in the Buffy television series were also very lovable, beyond the main character. She soon had a group of friends who would help her to the ends of the earth and make her life as a slayer far more successful than slayers of the past. Her best friend Willow became one of the most powerful witches of all time, far removed from her shy, bumbling character in season 1. Xander remained his goofy, clumsy self, often needed rescuing more than he did the rescuing, but still coming to Buffy's aid more than once. Then of course there was the beautiful, but usually unwilling Cordelia, who preferred not to be associated with the slayerettes, but often found herself right along side them, vain yet helpful. And leading them all to triumph over any Apocalypse or opening of the hellmouth was the insightful and knowing Giles, watcher and father-figure to Buffy and her friends.
Of course the show was not complete without the token villains. Of course there were the typical vampires who come and go,
