Ethics in the workplace

Ethically challenged!

Sometime ago I had a conversation with my friend, who works for a Business Process outsourcing company in Bangalore. He told me that their company had put a sign recently in their lavatory "Don't flush the condoms! Kindly throw it in the waste bin". Buwaahhaaa! What was that?

I was left wondering what kind of ethics do we follow in our workplace? I do accept that the employee ethics has evolved a lot these days. With a huge attrition rate employers are having a hard time. They make everything flexible to keep you at bay. From work timings to clothing everything is now the choice of the employee. So what is the extend to which an employee can go violating the ethics? All of us at least at some point or other violate office ethics to some extend! Yes I blog this from my office PC and yet I don't think I am violating much! You might have filled an appraisal form with a lot of "DID s" although literally you might have DONE nothing! I know a friend who does personal international calls from his desk phone! (grrrr!, I can't even make a long distance call from my phone). I downloaded some of the episodes of "Simpsons"(..some 4 Gb of video) from office and took home in a USB hard disk.(: P).

So again what is the extend to which an employee can go violating the ethics? I feel that all these facilities (or may be created facilities) are nothing but the sops the company pays you additionally along with your pay package to get their job done! So what is my point? Go on! You think you are cheating the company by doing unethical activities and company does nothing to prevent this! NO. They just allow you to do unethical activities just to make you feel that you are winning (or cheating) over the company and finally they make you stay back and do their job!

Ahhhh! .

Soon you can see employee manuals with lines like Employees are expected to wear condoms while having sex in office premises'. .....Long live good times!
