Creativity is not a dying art

I sure hope not, but I'm so afraid it's true. As a very creative person, I recognize creativity when I see it. Unfortunately, I'm really not seeing much of it any more. As a teacher, I've seen a few creative people, but I've seen a whole lot more that just act helpless when asked to do something creative. It's too much work.

Then we look at today's commercials. Not all of them of course, but let's take Burger King for an example. What in the world are they thinking? None of their commercials are creative: they are creepy! More and more I'm seeing the dumbing down of all kinds of media... in the United States.

When we deprive our children of an imagination, through excessive TV, video games... we stifle their ability to be creative. Creative people have some innate talent, but they learned to solve problems in ways that others couldn't. Instead of seeing a wall they can't get around, they see the trellis they can climb or the hole they can dig. They are the dreamers of the world, and sadly, they are a dying breed.
