Let's have fun! That should be the first thought for the first time camper. The easiest way to do this is to clear up a few misconceptions.
First, wild animals are wild, and should be treated with respect, but usually they are not dangerous to people if reasonable care is taken. Bears, cougars, and even snakes will avoid people when possible.
Second, learn how to make a willow cooking stick. It isn't at all difficult. Just cut a willow branch about 3'-4' long. Carefully peel the bark off the narrowest end, to about 8" and sharpen it to a point. This is suitable for cooking hotdogs, marshmallows, and even such things as fish.
Third, have a good idea of what you are going to do when you get out. Key to your interests. If you are interested in rocks or rock collecting, camp in a place that offers rocks to collect or look at. If you love fishing, go somewhere that there are fish to catch. Try to enjoy every moment you are out in camping.
Fourth, if you "must" have a shower every day, go only to places that offer showers. These will usually cost money, so expect this. If not, and you prefer places with few people, look for those places that aren't widely advertised.
Fifth, go prepared. Always pack warm clothes and extra socks, and if you are going out for 2 days, pack enough food for 4. Don't rely on what can be caught in camp. This will make your trip more stress free and comfortable.
Sixth, don't be afraid to ask someone you trust, who has been camping, for pointers. Also don't be afraid to look online for tips. This site has several that can be useful to beginners and experienced campers alike.
Above everything, enjoy yourself. Camping can be a wondrous adventure, even if you aren't far from home. But that is entirely dependent on how you approach it.
