How to stop a school bully

by William Clark II

Created on: June 19, 2007

In order to stop school bullying, it would require a complete overhaul of how bullies are handled. The violent school rampages of the past decade are not a sign that todays teens are all becoming more violent, it is because school harassment has gotten so out of hand, with the victimized students thinking they have little recourse but to fight back and make everyone pay. I'm not at all implicating that those that respond to harassment with such baneful acts are justified, but they are showing us that something is going wrong with the way schools respond to bully's.

We have all been there, we've seen it happen to others,we've had it happen to us, and at times we've participated in it,whether it was slighting someone that looked or acted different or bullying the bully's ourselves. The reason that any of it happens is because of the indifference of school administrator's and staff, and the ingrained social mentality of young people that; At-least he/she isn't picking on me this time, or if I go to a Teacher they wont do anything about it, and if I continue to report it they will consider me a tattle tale.

The following is what happened to me, please don't consider this a blog in disguise as a Helium article because it bears credence to the schools undertone of ignoring harassment and violence, and shows just how far the school will let someone go.

When I was in grade school I was small, and underweight, this made me easy prey to the bully's, and was harassed, beat up and had my glasses broken twice, before fifth grade. By high school I had grown to be 6'2" and a good 225 pounds, due to my past experiences I had taken Krav Maga starting in junior high. What happened was that only after a couple of fights with Seniors while I was a Freshman, did they lay off of me. After that I developed a reputation and no-one would mess with me, and the bully's turned to others, when this happened I had taken to stepping in and became a bully of bully's. I was not justified in doing so, but felt that since the teachers ignored it, I may as well do to them as they do to others. At no time what so ever did I get in trouble for my actions, and there were times when teachers were witness to it. One time a guy picked a fight with my friend, and I went to the guys homeroom class before school and laid him out just as the Teacher walked in, I was given a verbal reprimand, and told to get to my class, by the Teacher, and nothing more, the guy had bloody nose and went to the nurses office,
