Of course creativity and imagination are one in the same and yet they are different. Most everyday I hear someone say to me that they wished they knew how to write a story, so I try to explain to them they must use their imagination for there is a story in everything. Most youngsters after I explain to them how to use their imagination can write a short story of some type but what I have noticed is that I have to walk them through the creativity portions of the stories. It is easy for them to combine colours or words and explain their emotions or feelings but it is totally different when they try to put them together.

When I was a child it seemed every child on the block knew how to come up with a new game to play, whether it be with rocks and sticks or a verbal game. Today many children will sit around saying there is nothing to do; unless of course you have video games to play. Playing video games is not being creative nor does it teach our children to be creative, they teach our children how to play by someone else's rules instead of using their own creativity. When was the last time you saw your child take a piece of paper and fold it into an airplane or make a sock puppet? In todays society they expect us as parents to rush out and buy the creations of generations past and even then they don't know how to use their imagination enough to play with those items. Creativity is a dying necessity as we have been brought into cooking from a box instead of baking from scratch. I believe that A.D.D. is not a true disease, instead I believe it is a lack of creativity causing our children to be bored with parents who won't take the time to show their children the fundamentals of childhood. Kindergartners are now expected to know all the states instead of the rainbows colours and they have to count to one hundred instead of counting squares and circles. How can one expect a child to learn that through their creativity they can draw a person using a triangle, circle and a few squares if we keep teaching them we don't have time to use our imaginations? For in order to keep creativity alive we must show them how to use their imaginations. Since most adults won't take the precious time to do so; we are loosing creativity!
