It is interesting that people in North America seem immune to the adverse effects of anything artificial that we eat. With the many different diseases that seem to be popping up every day, people should have a better awareness of the saying, "You are what you eat." It is hard to make a scientific conclusion on what artificial flavoring and artificial coloring may have on the human body since we are only through a few generations of using it. However, in Japan, the general consensus of food coloring is that it causes cancer. About a decade ago, food coloring was prominently used in most foods (as in North America today). As the years passed, more and more research was done on the subject and the population decided that it wanted to eat a diet that included more natural and healthy foods. People simply stopped purchasing products that were coloring enhanced so manufacturers stopped adding them in their products.
With respect to children, their metabolism is much more sensitive to an adult's which means that any toxins introduced into the body is magnified. While it is a choice as to what to feed your child and a difficult one to restrict all types of unhealthy food, it would be wise to find out as much information as possible on the types of ingredients found in snacks and especially in junk food. Then at least try to limit the amount to small portions every week. For the past few years, the evil ingredient that has graced the pages of every magazine and newspaper has been trans fat. Maybe the next will be artificial flavoring and coloring.
Oh, and just to give you some fodder for your challenge. Which country has the highest life expectancy rate? You guessed it. Japan.
