Choosing between laptop and desktop can be a real quandary. I'm lucky enough to own both and to be pushed to definitively fall on the side of laptop or desktop in the argument is a tough decision.
Each has a place and purpose in everyday computing that makes one more appropriate and efficient to use than the other, depending on the situation. Deciding should be mainly based on the usage you intend your machine for. The primary consideration in selecting one or the other is where you intend to be using it and what you'll be using it for. Obviously a desktop must be instantly ruled out if you require your computer to be portable. Your information is extremely portable on both options with the ability of flash drives, writable CD's/DVD's and portable external hard drives to store varying sizes of files and data.
I would personally advise to purchase a desktop over a laptop because you can eventually progress to a laptop too. In my use of home computers my desktop PC is like the central hub of all my computing, with my laptop being a more convenient portable option for comfort and ease. I couldn't live without my laptop but if I was starting from scratch with no computer I would be purchasing a desktop first. Unless you're needing your computer to be primarily used on the move it's the best option. Then if you find yourself thinking you might purchase another computer I would advise to get a laptop because you then have the desktop as your focal point of your computing with bigger capacity for memory and modification. If you intent to use your computer for gaming again a desktop is the best option with upgrades of graphic and sound cards to suit the requirements of new games being able to be carried out quite easily.
Laptops have more of a tendency to crash and overload in memory. My laptop has had several spells back in the shop and having my desktop has been a godsend. Desktops have the ability to be adapted to be more efficient and speedy in the use of the Internet to a greater degree than a laptop.
I definitely see a laptop as an extra luxury and should be an addition to a users personal system that should start with a good old reliable desktop rather than having a laptop as a starting point. Desktops can now be assembled to a high specification for a very reasonable price and have less that can go wrong with them as opposed to a small intricate laptop.
