I sat one day in my garden for the first time in a long time having just 5 minutes to myself in the Spring sunshine when my moment of revelation happened.

I realised that though I liked my job I didn't really love it and what I really wanted to do was to spend my time painting. Additionally I was going to work mainly to pay a really expensive mortgage, and I began to ask myself - "Why?". Im over fifty, divorced and have no children - who was I going to leave it all too? I know many pensioners who live in houses they can afford to heat in winter and cant afford to update, did I want to join this unhappy group in my retirement?

I am also aware of others who have had to move into nursing homes only to have to sell their homes and possessions to pay for their care, whilst others in the nursing homes are paid for by the state as they have no assets. Did I want this to happen to me?

So I decided to start to shed my possessions, some have gone to ebay others to the local charity shop or car boot sale. I'm liquidizing my assets. I am sorting out a remortgage on my house to release some equity and making arrangements to rent it out for 12 months.

Once everything is in place I'm off round the world traveling, paint brushes in hand and laptop by my side. I intend to write and paint my way round the world. Hopefully there will be enough material to write a book.

As to the future I'm not worrying about that in my experience something always turns up! - and that was my moment of simple revelation. It will be different for all of us but at sometime or other we all get that one pivotal moment in our lives.
