Essays: Dreams & goals

They say if you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans. It's funny how much your dreams and goals change as you get older. Trust me, I am in the midst of a huge about face right now. Ever since I was a little girl, my biggest dream has been to be successful. Well, that sounds easy enough and general enough doesn't it? The problem is that over the years what I consider "success" has changed drastically.

I have spent the last seven years building a successful business. I have gone from a single little office to a brand new beautiful 2600 square foot building. All the people who have believed in me from the beginning seem to think that I have finally made it. I thought so too, until I stood back and looked at the big picture.

Since I have always been so career oriented, I have given very little thought to much outside of that. I have a great family (parents and siblings) and a fabulous husband. But, I have never even considered having a family all my own. At least until just recently. I realized that I have built all of this "success" and I really have no one to share it with. Enter that infamous biological clock.

Now I find myself in unfamiliar territory. I have a huge decision to make. Unfortunately, there is no market analysis or statistics that are going to tell me what the right move is. I have to depend completely on my gut feeling and follow my heart. The two things I have taught myself to second guess in the business world are all I have to go on. Now I have a completely different dream; to hear the pitter patter of little feet.

It is so funny the way things work out. Just when you think you have your life set on auto pilot and everything is going your way, you hit a little turbulence. I hope that I am ten times as successful now with this second dream. I now know that success wears many different hats. It doesn't have to be applied to just one thing. It can be sought in all areas of your life, and I look forward to my next big achievement.
