Restaurant reviews: The Salty Dog Cafe, Hilton Head, SC

Every November, like geese migrating to a warmer climate, swarms of tourists and part-time locals invade Hilton Head, S.C., and flock to The Salty Dog Caf in an attempt to elude the turkey and honey baked ham that haunt their memories from past Thanksgivings.
The Salty Dog Caf, located at South Beach Marina on Hilton Head Island manages to cater to many different types of cliental.

The relaxed dining atmosphere with a menu ranging from grilled cheese sandwiches, thick juicy cheeseburgers to live Main lobster makes it a popular area attraction to vacationing families.
The gregarious, friendly wait-staff cater to your every whim, making sure your drink glass is never half empty and are more than wiling to answer the multitude of questions asked by befuddled tourists.
The scenic setting, overlooking the South Beach Marina, with outdoor seating available, provides a wonderful choice for a romantic dinner.
The Salty Dog menu is striking in its vast array of seafood, which is not surprising considering its location on the South Carolina coast.
If it can be found swimming in the ocean or drifting in a Louisiana bayou, the Salty Dog can fry it, grill it, or barbeque it, whatever your taste buds desire.
For those who lack a taste for seafood, the Salty Dog offers a handful of entrees featuring animals that live on the land, such as the Hilton Head Cheesesteak, Jamaican Jerk Chicken Sandwich and the Big Jake Dog Basket, a quarter pound hot dog on a cheese filed hoagie roll.
A fly in the Salty Dog ointment concerns its menu prices.
Patrons should expect to pay in the neighborhood of $9 for the average entre. A few plates, such as the aforementioned Big Jake Basket costs only $6.25 but something as simple as the Fried Shrimp Basket will set you back $9.25.
The portion sizes, large enough to satisfy the average consumer, are nowhere near extravagant enough to warrant the steep price.
Throw a drink into the mix and diners will wind up paying $10 or more for a meal that could have been purchased a few more miles inland at another restaurant.
However, those restaurants a few miles inland have no where near the charm, beauty and world class service of The Salty Dog Caf.
So dig deep into your pockets, savor some barbeque shrimp while watching boats cruise in and out of the marina and remember, a meal at the Salty Dog will only hurt your bank account for a little while.
