The benefits of cross-training employees

In the world today, we are trying to do more with less. Our workforce is being outsourced in alarming numbers. No one is immune to the loss of a job. Everyone is expendible. Therefore it is unthinkable not to cross-train to another job if you are given the opportunity. A lot of companies offer their workers additional training. I would suggest you take them up on that offer. Not only will you learn something new, this will put you ahead of someone who only knows their job if there should be a layoff. The days of know how to do only your job has long since passed, you now have to be able to adapt to new working conditions and a person who is cross-trained is more likely to be adaptible to any situation since they changed once, they may change again.
Cross-training is benefitial to the employer too. You will get a trained person to do more than one job eliminating the need to hire another person. And may save you from having to layoff a valuable employee later on down the road.
I don't understand why more companies don't cross-train. It is a positive step for all involved.
