Richie Ramsey has a lot of good golf ahead of him. He's just 23 years old and has already qualified for a U.S. Open and a British Open. The 2007 U.S. Open, which Ramsay just finished competing in, is currently making the very best golfers look like weekends hacks. While Ramsay failed to make the cut this weekend, he was close, only finishing a remarkable two strokes back. He finished 2nd among 11 amateurs competing this weekend.
Ramsay's lackluster first round performance did him in. He shot 8 strokes over par, digging himself into a deep hole. Considering most golfers were struggling to even get close to par, it was likely Ramsay's total would rise in the 2nd round. And rise it did, however, only by 4 strokes, a solid improvement from his 1st round score. Ramsay finished 12 over par after two days at the U.S. Open, but finished ahead of more than 60 golfers, including PGA tour strongholds Retief Goosen, Davis Love III, Arron Oberholser and Sergio Garcia. An added benefit for Ramsey this weekend was the experience of larger and rowdier crowds than normal following him around the course. I guess being paired with Tiger Woods has to be quite a perk for a 23 year old.
Ramsay, a Scottish lad, is due to graduate from Stirling University in Scotland with a marketing degree this month. Stirling University is a strong school ranking highly in many academic categories. Obviously a bright and driven young man, he also has great role models to look up to. A hometown friend and fellow PGA tour golfer Paul Lawrie texts Richie daily just to give advice. Richie's dad is an architectural lecturer at a university. Brains certainly run in Richie's family.
Richie isn't foreign to golf success however. His amateur career has been simply impressive and it's easy to see why Ramsay is considered a rising star in the eyes of the golf world. He recently won the 2006 U.S. Amateur Championship, becoming the first Scot to win it since 1898. He has also been a part of the prestigious Walker Cup and Palmer Cup teams. He's had quite a beginning.
You can see Ramsay tee it up and try to shock the world at the 2007 British Open in July.
