Imagine this: You are playing a bestselling RPG, Final Fantasy X, and in one of the scenes, Titus, one of the main characters, meet his nemesis and is going into the final battle of the game. Right, we know the size and movement of the enemy already tell you how important this battle is: But what if in the background, a music from Crazy Frog hummed?
I don't know about others, but for me, I will laugh, and laugh, and the next moment, my character is killed off and I have to restart the level again.
I had been playing RPG since I gotten my first playing console, the retro yet addictive Sega Megadrive. From there, I had completed all the RPGs that I had: Shining Force, Phantasy Star, etc.
So let's get to that question again: Role-playing and music: Ambiance or distraction? What I don't understand is how it will distract others: Game makers spent thousands of dollars to create that musical masterpiece so that you can get into the mood of the game. Think Final Fantasy 7's Aeris' theme, and the popular Final Fantasy 8's Eyes on Me. Without them, how popular will Aeris and Rinoa will be?
Just like in a movie, you need great music to smooth the storyline. You need great music to tell a story in a RPG; no doubt regardless of whether or not the music is good or not, which is pretty much subjective, we need them: Music.
If not, you can try playing a RPG without turning on the volume. It's like watching a mute movie; just that when you're supposed to cry, you didn't cry, and that when you're supposed to laugh, you didn't laugh.
