This is a quick and easy way to create a batik-looking art that can be used in scrap-booking or hung on the wall. First, a list of supplies you will need.
2 pieces of typing paper
pencil
crayons
black water-based paint
a small paintbrush
sponge
an iron set to medium
A couple sheets of old newspaper
about half an hour to an hour per project
The first step is to draw out the picture you'd like. A flower, a butterfly, a sunset, anything you'd like. You don't have to have a lot of details because you are going to color over the entire paper in crayon.
Once your picture is drawn, color it in! Color heavy and make sure you cover all the white paper. This is important. Use a lot of bright colors.
Done coloring? Now, take your art and crinkle it up like you were going to throw it away, only don't. Trust me!
Flatten out your crinkled art on one of the pieces of old newspaper. Cover the entire picture with the black water-based paint. Let it dry for a few minutes, then sponge off the excess paint. Let it air dry.
Almost finished. With the second piece of paper, cover the first and iron it. Be careful here. Don't run the iron back and forth over the page, but set it down and lift it up on each section until you have done the whole picture.
And there it is, with the look of batik but so much easier! This project can be done with children as long as the ironing part is supervised. Matte the pictures, frame the pictures, or create your own scrap-booking paper! Experiment. Have fun.
