She was less angry at him than she was at herself. What would people say? They would jeer, she knew it. Everyone had told her but she refused to see because she was blinded by love like the cliches always say. Three years she'd stuck by him, visiting day after day and telling everyone she knew how unfair the justice system had been. A dodgy lawyer, bad advice, entrapment. She'd reeled off all the excuses he'd made to her and insisted upon Tommy's innocence, never doubting it herself.
Until now. Now everything unravelled. One anonymous note and everything came crashing down. She might have missed it. If Tommy's hearing hadn't been put back to the end of the following week she would never have caught it, it would have landed in the intended recipient's hands and she would have been oblivious. She would have gone to the dinners their friends threw, smiled politely and make a public demonstration of her support. She'd already picked out the dress she wanted to wear and in her head she'd leaned over and kissed Tommy between courses so many times. She was going to boldy discuss the case, refusing to have it swept under the carpet, she would stand by her man and offer him the support she promised on their wedding day.
But Tommy had shrugged off that responsibility the day he did this. He actually deserved the incarceration they'd fought against together. She felt betrayed, furious. How dare he? How could he take her trust and just throw it away? If he'd come to her and told her at the beginning perhaps they might have fought this together, as a team. They could have recovered from a mistake but there was no repairing the deceit. How DARE he?
So, although he was expecting her when visiting hours rolled around again, just like every day, this time she wouldn't be there. This time she was going to set things straight. Her hand hovered over the telephone keypad and she took a deep breath. Emily was done with the falsehoods; she started to dial.
