Feminism Gone Out of Fashion

We talk about feminism as though it were a fashion trend going out of style. It is not. In all facets and feminism schools we talk about our rights as women of diverse cultures, not just as women of one culture. If we want to pursue this argument on the basis that feminism is outdated, then this movement is just as outdated as the rest of the society around it and there seemingly should be no concern!

One of the primary functions of the prevailing feminisms in the subsaharan Africa was to help women obtain jobs in government positions as well as secure their roles as mothers on paid maternity leave which was three months seven years ago when I left my country. So really, a feminist movement fighting to support this way of life cannot be compared to a trendy style of "Knickerbockers" at the arrival of "Palazoos"!

Fashion is something we can lose to pick up later in future years. Feminism is much rooted than that. It is an ongoing struggle with like consciences to address issues that bring together women of a kind. Unlike fashion, when a Feminist movement dies its core ideals insist in the minds and hearts of those who have been part of the movement. If the movement were to pick momentum later it would build up more strength on the core values that promote health, respect and virtue for women.

Some fashions may perhaps never make it back in the designer world yet something about women's values will always be there. Some might argue that fashions can also built or improve on other fashions. There is a major difference between the two. Fashion is for most a matter of preference. Women don't prefer that they be treated like humans. This is not a suggestion! Women's values are both a preference and imperative. They are in the mould of our communities. In cultures where women shape the communities it is easy to see that Feminism is not as disposable as a trendy patterns when new arrivals display on flashy boutique windows.

Indeed some might even view this notion of feminism as outdated a deterrence on womens efforts to promote their well being. Yet if it not, since there is nothing wrong with wearing outdated clothes, there should also be nothing wrong with spending time on Feminism and its deaprtment to keep it alive.
