If you have a laptop you might want to consider the smaller printers that could fit inside your carry bag.
For a desktop you should consider the amount of deskspace you have and the placement of the printer when choosing the right design.
As for type of printer I like the front loaders but there are bottom loaders too for those that don't have the necessary horizontal plane. Vertically challenged printers tend to take up more of your horizontal desk space plane.
I would stick with USB because of the versatility unless you lack support. In that case choose what works best for you such as serial or parallel. Many receipt printers use thermal paper rather than the US standard 8 1/2 by 11.
Keep in mind the color as well so that you can enjoy your space while printing. There will be times you will have to adjust your printer and it will require a look usually unless you are blind. In which case you might want to notice the texture of the printer. There are smooth printers and rough printers, plastic and metal.
Get a mental picture of the printer you would like and enjoy the shopping. Take in the sights and sounds while keeping your ideal printer in mind. Enjoy the experience and the atmosphere.
