This subject always makes me pull out my soap box. You can't just ask about animal extortion for the purpose of medical research, you have to look at all animal testing. While you're at it, throw in consumption of animals, animals used for labor and Fluffy your pet.

We as humans use animals for any and all purposes we feel necessary. We eat them, experiment on them, use them for physically hard labor and we make them our companions. When you look at this without the rose colored glasses of every day life you see this for what it really is: Darwin's evolution survival of the fittest. Humans control the planet because we are smarter than other animals. We have found many ways to protect our species against disease and accidents and our population is soaring. We use whatever means necessary to ensure the continuation of this world domination, not just against ourselves but also against every other species that is on this planet.

No other animals have morals or what we call a conscious; this is a human trait alone. I am absolutely certain that if my dog had opposable thumbs and was able to walk up right he would take advantage of the situation and experiment on me for the preservation of his species. Hopefully, he will think I am too cute to hurt, make me his pet and dress me in stupid outfits instead.
