"It's not what you know, it's who you know." This powerful statement rings true for anyone seeking to get ahead. Within any given employment infrastructure it is vital to know and understand the wants and needs of the person capable of making and breaking an employee.
The ability to be humble might be a better description of what is necessary rather than using the phrase, "kissing up." Apathetic employees who make little effort to please their superiors cannot possibly expect to climb the ladder of success within an organization if they are not willing to do what the employee next to them is doing.
Since most people would agree that a person gets out of a situation that which they put into it, it is clearly expected that getting ahead requires at least a bit of catering to the desires of superiors. However, there is a fine line between meeting expectations and going overboard. As long as the goal is to perform at the highest level possible while meeting or exceeding the boss's wants and needs and not to overwhelm with superficial compliments and over-emphasized communicative efforts, an employer would inevitably appreciate any subordinate who is willing to go the extra distance to get ahead.
