When we say 'kissing up' we essentially mean following the orders of your boss whilst in his presence, to the letter. We strive to not only match his expectations, but surpass them and take the work to new highs that will lead the company in the same way.

So is this essentially moving up the ladder? I believe so. It is the key to moving up. To listen and please those who are superior to us, will increase the chance of a better rank in the organisation.

Some may argues that 'kissing up' is simply a way of putting on a facade that is not in the slightest a true reflection of oneself. This isn't 'kissing up', this is deceit, and will eventually lead to mischief and failure. The boss isn't generally stupid. He will eventually suss this out. And if this happens; if the boss feels he can't trust you, how may one be able to progress up the ladder?

'Kissing up' may also lead one to cross their ethical boundaries. For example, should we listen to our boss if they ask us to lie or to cheat? Well personally, I don't think we should listen them? Doesn't that then contradict what I have said above, where we said listening to the boss is integral to progression in one's career? It may be so. But if one is able to stand rooted to their ethics, then maybe, just maybe, that will impress the boss, and thereafter lead to promotion.
