Gaining the approval of your boss is essential if you want to get ahead in your career. I am not suggesting that you should go against your principles, but you do need to be aware of the impression that you are giving out. It all depends on how you define what 'kissing up' means.
Your boss is the one who will make the decisions about who does, or does not, get promoted to the next level. 'Kissing up' does not have to mean that you are constantly nursing your boss's ego. Just being seen to work hard and having a positive and proactive approach will show your boss respect.
Showing your boss respect is the ultimate compliment. Without even saying a word you are saying that you value his opinion. You don't have to agree with everything he says, but putting your ideas across in a constructive way will show that you value the relationship.
When you are seen to work well, you are making sure that you are a deserving candidate for the next step up the ladder. Your boss has to select candidates for promotion on some kind of criteria, so you need to make sure that you give him some positive reasons for selecting you.
As long as you don't compromise your own principles, there is nothing wrong with trying to get ahead. It is quite possible to 'kiss up' to your boss simply by showing respect and working hard. It is up to you how you define what 'kissing up' means and how you decide to put it into practice.
