A black hole is a spot in space with gravity so strong that nothing can escape from it,not even light.
There are two types;
Stellar black holes are imploded dead stars.These are quite small, and our galaxy alone contains millions of them.They are extremely dense.They are formed when a star dies in a 'supernova' or large explosion. When this happens,the energy that is used by stars in nuclear fusion drains its now depleted resources,so there is nothing left to counter-act the gravity pulling everything in towards the centre. So the mass rapidly becomes more and more dense and a black hole is formed.
Super-massive black holes are as the name suggests,quite large areas of space.
Space and time is distorted inside a black hole. We cannot see them because they pull in all the light.We only know they exist because astronomers can detect the force of gravity working on other things around them.
