Should parents raise their children without television? Yes. Studies have shown that more than 1 hour of television a day can delay speech, add to the risks of ADHD, and slow down the development of imagination. There has also been links to the slow development of large and small motor skills, and TV watching. I could go on, but everyone knows how to use the Internet to search for information on the subject. And, we all can take a look at our children after sitting in front of the television all day, and notice they seem glossy eyed.
The question raises a deeper issue, in my opinion. CAN parents raise their children in this day and age, without television. Because that is not the question posed, we must leave that for you to contemplate on your own. However, when faced with the realization that we are giving our children over to other sources to care for them, the truth begins to push at the edges of our false reality. Day-cares, babysitters, and televisions all serve one purpose, and one purpose only. They keep us from being responsible for our own child's development.
As a society, we have lots of excuses for this: work, need for free time, appointments, money. As I write this article, my son is playing in his room. But before that, I had him at the TV, engrossed in his movie, so that I could check my emails without interruption. We are all part of a bigger problem. Raising children isn't easy. But dumping them in front of the television only causes us all to lose in the experience. Step back, take a moment and decided: Who do you want raising your kids? The Doddlebops, or you?
