I believe that success is the most important thing in football. There is little point playing the most attractive football known to man and losing while doing it. Success makes money and money makes the world go round (I know that's a cliche but it still holds true).
Given the re-appointment of Kevin Keegan at Newcastle this week, you may be forgiven for thinking that style is the only thing that matters. Let's put this into perspective in terms that really matter. Under Keegan, between 1992 and 1997, how many trophies did Newcastle win?
The answer is none. I do remember the classic games that Newcastle and Liverpool played that ended 4-3. I remember sitting there as a young boy and being mesmerized by both teams and their attacking intent. I don't deny that it was fascinating to watch but Newcastle were far too inconsistent to launch a realistic title bid. I think that proves my point.
You look at the job that Keegan's predecessor at Newcastle, Sam Allardyce, and look at what his Bolton side managed to produce on a shoestring budget. They played some absolutely awful football. I'll be honest and say that Route 1 football isn't always pretty to watch but Bolton made it work. They went from relegation fodder to UEFA Cup participants within 3 years.
I absolutely love to watch slick and flowing football but if it comes down to entertainment or winning, I want my team to win every time. Winning breeds confidence and, with confidence, flair play may follow. Just look at Blackburn recently. They've gone from tough and negative play to stylish football because of the confidence. And building a reputation for trying to achieve success has brought players like Roque Santa Cruz into Ewood Park.
I know that some people don't agree with me, and I can see why, but I know in my heart of hearts, that any fan would take success if it was handed to them.
