Why Scouting is great for kids!

his World Wide Youth Organization has its roots founded in a movement started by Lord Baden Powell in 1907, but what impact is it really having on today's youth culture and is it still the organization it once was?

In a society laden with stereotypes, materialism and fame; it's a breath of fresh to see an organization such as the Scouting Movement still inspiring millions of youngsters across the world. Founded on the principle of developing young people both physically, mentally and spiritually, it allows freedom for individuals to be themselves in the wider context of a rather checkered society.

Currently boasting more than 28 million members across 217 countries this is not your average' youth club. Members often describe their experience of scouts much like a family' environment. Close enough to share experiences but having the independence to make your own choices and decisions.

I was fortunate to meet with one past member who described about how the movement has given him the confidence to reach new heights and how it is now time for him to give something back!

Andrew Hayes, 25, started in the movement as a Cub Scout before becoming a Scout, Venture Scout and is now working towards his warranted leader status. He is someone who has really embraced the whole scouting experience with both hands and has clearly reaped the rewards along the way.

Describing his experience he said: The movement has really shaped who I am, it has given me the confidence to do things I never thought possible and face challenges I never anticipated I would.'

Growing up with severe dyslexia, Andrew struggled to do some things we take for granted from an early age. Whilst his friends were out socializing he found himself studying hard for his exams. But in between his study he managed to make time for scouts'- in fact it was at scouts he found a friend and support network which gave him the confidence to build on his strengths in a positive way.

Being part of scouts gave me an outside interest, it enabled me to meet new people, learn new skills and work towards goals.'

Andrew explained his biggest achievement was gaining the Queen Scout Award which he said was equally challenging and rewarding.

Now working as a full time design engineer for JCB, Andrew still finds time to give something back to the organization, which he says has made him the person he is today. As an Assistant Leader he is enjoying working with other young people to develop the skills he learned. Talking about his experience he said:

I just want to give something back to the organization that taught me so much, it's not just about learning the skills of tying knots it's more about learning about yourself and giving you the confidence to go out there and achieve what you want.'
