The first thing to know about Helium is that it is NOT a "question and answer" site. That's how it started life, and you'll still find many posts written in that style - as well as many articles in this section, telling you that's what it is.

It's not.

Helium is a collection of articles written by members of the Helium community. Articles are supposed to be at least 400 words long, and depending on the subject, they're the kind of thing you might read in your newspaper, Time magazine, Cosmo or Cleo, or the sports papers. It's like Wikipedia in that you can find out a lot of information on Helium, but it's unlike Wikipedia in that writers here express their own opinions and points of view, and offer advice, instead of just quoting dry old facts.

Helium is a great place for aspiring writers to develop their craft. Post articles on the site and they'll be assessed by other members, so you can get an idea how well you're doing. You also earn money depending on how many people read your articles and how well you participate in the community, but it's nothing to get excited about. I've been a member for 4 months and have made $4, even though many of my articles are rated high. The people who make money typically have three or four hundred (yes, hundred) articles on the site.

So joining Helium to make money isn't a good idea. Join to enjoy the community, practice your writing and have fun. Any income is just icing on the cake!
