How to find a lawyer to take a case pro bono

The State Bar Association can be a good place to start if you are seeking a lawyer to handle your case without a fee. In some states, attorneys are required to complete so many hours of free service to the community. If you are near a law school, some attorneys working in a clinic will offer free legal services. You may also want to check with the legal aid clinic of your county or state. You can also cold call your way. Depending upon the severity or nature of the case some attorneys, especially those who are new and your case is substantive in nature may take on the case to build up their clientele.

You may also want to check with advocacy groups. Some advocacy groups such as those who work on the behalf of low income citizens may be able to connect you to an attorney who would handle your case at no cost.
