How to find a lawyer to take a case pro bono

Most large firms set aside time for pro bono cases, in fact some partnerships encourage it. Some small firms and sole practitioners will donate their time as well. Research will be involved on your part. Ask friends and families, call the local bar association and/or the bar association president and ask for a referral. Each firm will have it's own criteria for these matters, you just need to call and ask.

I have seen many, many attorneys draw free Wills and wrap up matters for people who are in the final days of their lives free of charge. The attorney will also go to the client at a hospital or hospice to have these documents executed. Again, you just need to ask.

Another good alternative is your local legal aid. These are good practitioners who want to help you. They do not have the funds from grants and loans to hire the amount of staff they need, so the client will wait a long time to have their case evaluated. The need for this kind of free or pro bono work is monumental throughout the country, and many times these attorneys and paralegals have more work than they can handle. If your income qualifies, you will be seen.

These are both very good free or pro bono options. You just need to do some research and find which option is the best for you.
