Do God's laws really have any benefit for us today? Does He really understand the pressures we face today, or is He just out of touch with reality? In order for us to understand God and His ways, it is important for us to ask direct questions. God is definitely not afraid to have us ask him these things because He will always come back with the answer we need. As I learned in school many years ago, the only dumb question is the one that you don't ask!
When we are trying to deal with the complexities of life, it becomes easy to second guess anyone who tries to constrain us with rules. We often think of God's laws more in terms of what we can't do, rather than in what we can. That is often because when we think of God's laws we are immediately drawn to the Ten Commandments. Since each commandment begins with "thou shalt not..." we are instantly reminded of what we can't do. But God's laws are much more than a list of what not to do. They are a listing of what is necessary for a happy life.
It is in our nature to be rebellious, and do what we are told not to do. If you don't believe that, go ask your teenager to clean their room. We as adults are no different. When God directs us to do something, we often find ourselves trying to make excuses as to why we can't. We find ourselves questioning God, because He is directing us to do something that is different than what we think we should do. So instead of listening to God,we go off and listen to our own advice. I don't know about you, but I often find that listening to what I think gets me in more trouble than if I had listened to God in the first place.
Whenever faced with two different opinions, our pride often insists that we must be right, even if the other opinion does come from God himself. To accept God's answer over mine requires me to humble myself, which is a very uncomfortable position to be in because I want to be in control of my life. But I find that when I am trying to be in control, that is when my life is really out of control.
But the main question we need to ask is, what does it take for us to be successful in life? Real success comes in understanding that the laws of God are not a hindrance to our lives, but rather a pathway to prosperity. Instead of seeing the Ten Commandments as a roadblock in our lives, we need to see them for what God intended them to be. Half were written to show us how to live in harmony with God, and the other half to show us how to live in harmony with each other. If you really look at them, any violation of these laws only brings trouble in our lives.
We think of God as someone who is just waiting for us to slip up so He can punish us, but in reality, God is a loving Father who has given us a plan to live by. In today's society with all the murder, rape, theft, and drug use, I would tend to think His plan may be a little better than ours.
It might be a good idea if we decided to stop taking our own counsel and start living in God's Word again.
Psalms 1:1-3 says,
"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."
