The importance of early childhood education

by Kim P.

Is early childhood education important to today's young children? The answer is yes, as long as, the program can be considered one of high quality. High quality early childhood educational programs consist of age appropriate curriculum, hands on activities, certified teachers, low teacher/student ratios, large classrooms, etc. Programs such as these provide children with many tools needed to successful accomplish their future academic years. In fact, many studies have concluded children unable to receive a quality early childhood education are at higher risk to struggle academically, repeat grades, require special educational programs, and have behavioral problems. While children receiving an early childhood education are less likely to have the issues listed above, they are more likely to read and write well, score higher on tests, and successfully graduate high school.

The school systems throughout the country are continuously "upgrading" their curriculum, which is putting more and more pressure on our children. Children in Kindergarten are now learning what my generation may have learned in first grade. If children entering Kindergarten are not exposed to the alphabet, phonics, mathematics, and more prior to entering Kindergarten, they will begin to struggle. Although it is important to mention, children should be allowed to be children.... but there is absolutely no reason why children should not be exposed to academic subjects prior to Kindergarten entrance. Additionally, if academic subjects are introduced to young children in a fun and playful manner, children will learn and absorb wonderful tidbits of knowledge without even thinking about it.
The knowledge obtained through an exciting early childhood program will not just benefit children upon their entrance into Kindergarten, but it will help them successfully succeed throughout their academic years!
