A car dealer client once told me women do not get half the respect due them when it comes to buying cars. This is why many women bring fathers, husbands, boyfriends or another male to the dealership. But it doesn't have to be like that, especially when there is information available on the Internet. Here are a few tips on successfully finding, buying and financing a new car:
- Know the vehicle. Assume the salesperson knows nothing about your car. Consumer Reports Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com) is a great tool for comparing vehicles side-by-side, and each manufacturer has its own site, as well. Research your vehicle, and have a list of questions ready.
- Know the dealership's inventory. If you want a specific color with specific options and you know (because you've checked the inventory on the dealer's website) that exact model is somewhere on the lot, the salesperson can't sell you a model with more options than you wanted.
- Know when to buy. The beginning of the month is a great time to look around and test-drive cars; salespeople won't need to meet their sales goals for a while and are more willing to talk about features and benefits of different models. The end of the month is the best time to buy, though, because you will have a better chance of negotiating a better price.
- Know the special financing options, or finance the purchase with an outside lender. Few people realize you don't need to go with the dealer's financier; credit unions and other banks often offer automotive financing. Before going to the dealer, know what your payments would be through your bank and weigh it against the dealer's special financing options.
- Know your limits. Be prepared to walk away if you're uncertain. There's no need to be pressured into buying a car (or anything else, for that matter).
Knowledge is invaluable when making a major purchase, even more when buying a car. Knowing more about the vehicle and the buying process will ensure a smooth transaction that you won't regret on the drive home!
