However unfair I think it is, some bosses prefer their underlings to kiss up to them. With that type of boss, you have to kiss up to them if you want to get ahead.

It is easy to spot this type of boss-everything has to be done their way all the time, and no argument against what they want to do is good enough to make them think twice. And most telling of all, less qualified kiss-ups get promoted over people who have been around longer and who are better qualified for the job, but refuse to kiss up.

Hopefully, you don't have this type of boss. But if you do, you need to learn to kiss up.

Find something that your boss is good at and admit it. Show them that you value their skill and experience, and are willing to take direction. Bosses like shows of respect. They like to feel that they are in control.

And while you are kissing up, do yourself a favor and look for another job. For a boss that only promotes kiss up is bad for the companies they are involved with.
