If you have ever been near the so-called "jamband" scene this debate has undoubtedly come up. Its the age old question asked on long drives between shows and late nights around the festival campfire.
For me the difference is all in the emotions. Phish can take you places without a single word being uttered. When Trey is "on" his single guitar can drive an entire stadium to a euphoric frenzy. Those familar with Phish know that "moment" at a show that sends shivers down the spine. 95% of the time it's during a jam not during a lyric.
On the other hand, The Dead derive their the majority of thier emotional depth from their lyrics, which while certainly carefree often have a twinge of sadness and lonelyness about them. Simply put, on the whole, the Dead have a serious emotional side while Phish lyrics are lighthearted, playful, and cynical.
