I appreciate the risk being taken by those who speak against this act. Their loyalty will be questioned. Their reasons examined.
What is not being discussed in a real and on-going debate is the possibility that these "Governmental Privileges," when put into unscrupulous hands, could result in a "legal incarceration" of any unpopular "faction of our population." This is the very scenario our forefathers were trying to prevent when they devised the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
We have already witnessed what blind allegiance to a political leader can lead to. Even without exploring the maligned trust we placed in President Bush so eagerly, we can examine the course of history and determine that we are treading on thin ice here.
When Hitler came into power, everything he did was LEGAL under their government. As his power increased, he modified existing laws to support his underlying agenda. In today's world, amendments are consistently being drafted that chip away at our country's foundational premises. My greatest concern is that we will fail ourselves and undermine our children's future, if we don't demand that our Constitution be preserved.
Balance of Power was first and foremost in our forefather's minds. They tried to create a country rooted in sound principles that would prevent tyranny from taking a foot-hold. They were well-aware that this kind of dominance would disguise itself in the form of a popular (but corrupt), president, a lop-sided body of lawmakers, or a Court that was wishy-washy with regard to the Constitution. If we flippantly disregard the concerns addressed within those documents...our citizens, (either now, or in the future) could, and indeed, MIGHT suffer at the hands of oppression.
