The Patriot Act understandably makes people nervous, and there is a reason to be nervous. This Act, in the wrong hands, could be exploited to undermine any American's constitutional rights, but as of right now it is being used for the safety of citizens in America. Before this act, there were slightly more limited approaches to monitoring the exchange of information inside the country. This made it very difficult to pinpoint the suspicious activities of the absurd people who planned and executed the 9/11 attack.
Here's a question, if there are people in America communicating with people outside of America about a future attack, if there are people crazy enough to suicide bomb a jetliner into a skyscraper, would you like to know about it? or would you leave them their privacy?

(/EDIT)

I just viewed a news report of a man who was incorrectly accused of being affiliated with terrorists, even though he was the one who called the FBI to report suspicious activity. Wow! I still stand by my opinion, but I honestly think that the whoever is in charge of accusing people on circumstantial evidence should be kicked. They have the Patriot Act so that they don't have to accuse on circumstantial evidence! What is wrong with the legal system?!?!?! Gaahh... So, the guy who spent plenty of time in solitary confinement for no reason received a paper that said something to the extent of, "You may have been suspected to be tangentially associated with what might be described as suspicious activity which you reported to be going on, so we decided to arrest you and put you in jail, oh, by the way, you can't bring charges against us, why? well because!" Holy crap someone needs to slap the government right now. *slap*
