Reflections: Appreciating the little things in life

I define the little things in life to be occurrences, which need no planning, require no cost, and are often pleasant surprises. Unfortunately, I also believe the little things in life are disguised and veiled in the muddle of everyday existence.

As we roam the avenues of our life, we have clear focus on the major tasks that are required of us. We plan, define, and sharpen our vision on these important aspects of our survival. We believe we need money, career success, and personal acknowledgments in order to arrive at a place we can say, "Look at me, I have it all!" This requires us to tunnel our vision and keep out the sights and sounds of the little things in life.

We need to change our priorities and lift the blinders from our eyes. Some people are able to do this through personal thought and reflection. Others have their blinders lifted for them. A catastrophic event occurs that blow the blinders clean off. Whether it's the death of a loved one, a cancer diagnosis, the loss of a job, or other life changing events. Either way, the realization occurs that there is life going on around us that is beyond the major tasks and accomplishments that we have assigned ourselves.

Once we are able to witness the little things in life that take our breath away, or make us smile, or give us a moment in time where we feel absolute contentment; that is when we are open to seeing what actually matters in life.
