The simple answer is you either are a morning person or you are not. I am not. Problem is, the business world operates as if everyone is.
Forget about changing and learn how to cope.
Go to bed early. OK, so far so good, but getting to sleep can be difficult the first few nights. I am told that after a sufficient amount of time, this will work.
Go to bed and get up at a consistent time each day. The theory is your body clock will eventually set itself. Yeah, right. My problem is whenever I get this done, I have to catch a flight at 4AM and stay up till 1AM without sleep in between and this screws up the theoretical internal clock.
In my opinion, strategies like making time for a stop at the local coffee shop or breakfast joint or whatever will not help with the aversion to early morning, but will cause you to resent the coffee or breakfast or whatever else it is you try to use to make the morning special.
Eventually, and with enough time, the earlier mornings will not be as difficult. One of my first jobs was in a record store. I generally worked noon to 9 PM, but had to open on Tuesday mornings at 10 AM. This felt like the crack of dawn to me.
Now, over twenty-five years later, I generally wake up on my own in time to get to the office by 9AM. This does not make me a morning person, because I still do my best work after lunch, but it does enable me to accommodate the artificial working day.
Its really the old story. If you want to be nice but really are not, just pretend to be. Do it long enough and people will think you are. Maybe you can even fool youself. Might work with becoming a morning person. If it does, let me know?
